Sophia(WANG YING)-Part 2

Combined withThe Great Gatsby, the American Dream could be a dishonest dream to achieve in the USA.In the novel, it mainly narrates the protagonist-Gatsby how to pursue the American Dream in his life, which reflects the epitome of entire society during the American Dream.Gatsby is mystery with less background that only a few people know him.When Gatsby was young, he has fallen in love with Daisy in the army.However, because of the First World War, Daisy broke up with Gatsby and married Tom.In order to pursue Daisy back, Gatsby has become a great rich businessman by his efforts with enormous money, supreme power and social status.In fact, the material changes are not his real American Dream.Gatsby does everything including making money only for his lover-Daisy back.No matter how cruel and hard the reality is, he always keeps the single-minded love for Daisy.For Gatsby, the money can fix everything that also could satisfy Daisy’s pursuit of materials.Admittedly, Gatsby’s American Dream tends to be foam that is superficial beauty but practical nothing.In terms of love, he could be totally naive and unrealistic who is willing to devote the whole thing for Daisy.Gatsby never realizes that Daisy is an illusion, because of the extremely idealism of his personality, he always believes that Daisy still loves him.The American Dreams that Gatsby achieved are all dishonest.On the one hand, despite he has vast wealth, his money is earn by unequal measure that sells bootleg alcohol.During the First World War, it is a prohibition which made the making of, the transportation of, and the selling of alcohol illegal.Besides, the social status and reputation bring Gatsby political power to break laws, such as furious driving in the novel.Similarly, in the Park Avenue, the rich businessmen living the south of Park Avenue collude with politicians to manipulate the political power using money.On the other hand, Gatsby still dreams that Daisy will be back to him and their love never changes.He regards Daisy as his American Dream and strives for achieving.However, his naivety and unreality in American Dream would cause him to go towards the tragedy.In conclusion, through the character of Gatsby, the American Dream is an unrealistic dream that people only pursue the illusion.
