Gao Mengyu(lisa)-part 2- Dishonest Dream

The American dream is only an illusion. The United States gives people unlimited hope that this wish will come true, but in fact, it will never. The American dream is corrupt and dishonest, this phenomenon in Fitzgerald novel "The Great Gatsby" the character Jay Gatsby is particularly prominent. Gatsby fell in love with a gorgeous girl named Daisy, but could not marry her because of poverty. After the outbreak of the First World War, Gatsby was transferred to Europe, Daisy breaks up with him, and married with Tom that born to the wealthy family. Gatsby is mistaken for Daisy betrayal of the soul of love because of money, then vowed to become a rich man to win back her love. So he took part in some dirty trading of alcohol, and be a “new money.” He dreamed that he would win back Daisy's love, but his dream eventually became a fantasy. In the film “Park Avenue: money, power and the American dream,” the game called a monopoly, it shows the rich can use the money to get more money. The purpose of the American dream is to allow people have equal opportunities to be successful. However, the rich players “exhibits a sense of entitlement” and keep earning money while the poor keep losing. And “Only four hundred of the richest Americans control the majority of the wealth of the bottle America. That’s 150 million people”, which means that the gap between the rich and the poor has expanded significantly in the past few decades. The rich make the public to pay more tax, but they have to accumulate their property through fraud. The poor class in the United States has become bigger in this environment. The poor are getting poorer, and the rich are getting richer. From the documentary and Gatsby, we can see that if the poor wants to have a better life, it’s very hard to achieve it, except with bad way. “Equality” “opportunity” and “richer” is not entirely reflected in the current situation of American society. Thus, I believe that the American dream is essentially dishonest.

  1. I read your part 2 of Dishonest Dream. In your opinion, American dream is essentially dishonest. I disagree your idea. Gatsby is a perfect example. He born in poor family. He loves Daisy, but she wants to fall in love with a rich man. From then on Gatsby is willing to be a rich person, although he by the ignominious way that he took part in some dirty trading of alcohol. He wins the American dream, became a rich man, that is an undeniable fact. And American dream also change destiny of some poor people, how to escape from poverty.——Evelyn
