The American dream is essentially dishonest and it is not depending on their people’s social condition, such as social status and asset. The American Dream proposes the rights to pursue freedom, equality and opportunities to achieve success. The American dream can be considered as a opportunity of earning lots of money in America. In the Great Gatsby, Gatsby wants money and social status, it makes him to be dishonest in earning money. Gatsby selling alcohol by smuggling. But on the other hand, there are some people who are honest, they earn money in a honest way, no cheating and no behaviors against laws such as Tom in The Great Gatsby, he can easily get anything what he want by using his own money. However, in our society, the dishonest ways are against the honest ways. Vicious competitions are appearing so the opportunities for the honest people to accumulate wealth are reduced. In the documentary Park Avenue: Money, Power and the American Dream, the people who are same like Tom, they live in a best place, they always are capitalists, they control and possess more money or resources. After that, the rich people who use their money to invest the government. It means that government will impose less tax on them and then they can make more profit. The richest people make impossible for the common people to move their class from down class to top class. Regarding who are at the bottom of the social ladder, no matter how hard they work, it is just not possible to accomplish their goals. So it makes sense that American is dishonest. There is nothing wrong to chase money and society status, but we should use a honest way to chase it. Base on current situation, the American Dream can’t accomplish as a poor, the reality destroys the American Dream and turns it to a dirty desires.
